New Courses and Service Opportunities
in Spring 2007

FIN 486 and EC 499
Time: To Be Announced (TBA)
Course Title: SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise)

What is SIFE and and how does it relate to students at Jacksonville State University? SIFE is a nonprofit organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. SIFE challenges students on more than 800 college campuses nationwide to take what they’re learning in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities. Guided by faculty advisors, SIFE Teams establish a variety of community outreach programs that promote free enterprise.

SIFE team members leverage their personal educational experiences, the expertise of their faculty advisors, and the resources of their institutions to implement programs that create real financial and economic opportunities for members of their communities. The effectiveness of their programs is judged at competition. Each national SIFE organization conducts a national competition, which is judged by leaders from its business community. At competition, SIFE teams present the results of their educational outreach projects and compete to determine which team was most successful at creating financial and economic opportunity for others. Attendance at the competition in Atlanta on April 5th is required.

Our JSU students develop outreach projects in our local area and devote approximately 40-50 hours to community service during the semester. For example, in the past our SIFE students have taught fourth grade students in local public schools about economics through a fun and interactive business simulation call BizWorld.

The class is open to all students of all majors subject to approval of the instructor.

Students can join SIFE without enrolling in the class upon a commitment of 10 hours of community service during the semester. It is an excellent networking opportunity and will enhance your resume.
