Over 90 Medals Awarded in Gamecock Youth Run

The Gamecock Youth Run, coordinated by Mrs. Lori Thornburg and sponsored by the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Jacksonville State University had a successful 4th year. The race was held October 28 and hosted children from ages 3 years - 6th grade, all in age-appropriate distances. In each age category, boys raced boys and girls raced girls. Awards were presented for 1st - 5th place in each race, with over 90 medals awarded.

This year students participating in this race came from over 15 different schools in Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, and Etowah Counties. Spring Garden won the Spirit Award for bringing the most students with 51, with the help of PE Teacher Mrs. Dana Austin. Weaver Elementary's PE Teacher, Ms. Jerry Simmons, also won a 2nd Place Spirit Trophy for bringing 43 students. Kitty Stone Elementary's PE Teacher Mrs. Jennifer Young brought 41 students and came in 3rd place.

Dr. Jeff Chandler, Department Head of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, thanks the faculty of the HPER Department for their help with the event as well as the community for their support in sponsoring the event. He also thanks the many HPER students who sacrificed their Saturday to help make this another successful event.
