Dr. Glenn Roswal’s Students Share Experiences
at Camp ASCCA

Students of Dr. Glenn Roswal, Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at JSU recently had a group of students interviewed about their volunteer experiences at Camp ASCCA. Video clips of these interviews can be seen on the ASCCA Journal website.

Four students from Jacksonville State University are interviewed in this report. Ryan, LaGreg, Beth, and Rebekah, each heading into the education field, were able to gain experience working with the disabled population. Ryan wants to teach science and physical education; LaGreg wants to teach physical education and special education; Beth and Rebekah both want to be special education teachers. Working at Camp ASCCA for the weekend was a great opportunity for these young people to get a taste of what their futures hold.

Not only did the volunteers get hands-on experience working and living with the campers, but they got a sense of how valuable a conversation can be. Throughout the weekend, volunteers and campers share the fun of activities and programs, but there’s also some time to just talk. Some of our campers are some of the happiest people you’ll ever meet. Just taking the time to listen to a story about the fishing pond or horseback riding can brighten a camper’s day and bring joy to your life as well.

This video interview takes a look at how our Jacksonville State University volunteers learned from their experience. They talk about the surprises they encountered and about how Camp ASCCA is different from other camp experiences.
