Jax State Set to Defend OVC Title

Jacksonville State University head volleyball coach Rick Nold had a Cinderella team last year, one on which all of the players returned from the year before. There was no difficult transition as players meshed together as a team. They were already on the same page.

The team went on to finish in third in the regular season, and then in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament turned the tables on Eastern Kentucky to win the OVC title for the first time.

Nold doesn’t have the luxury of having all his players returning this year. Gone are Suzi Terrell, a member of the school’s 1,000 kills club, and Kisha West, a top defensive player and holder of the school’s career dig record. While it would be crazy to say that West and Terrell won’t be missed, Nold again isn’t too worried because of the personnel he has coming back.

The Gamecocks return seven players from last year’s squad, including OVC Player of the Year Abbey Breit, a junior who has been named first-team preseason for the second straight year. Breit broke the school record for kills per game and was an honorable mention All-American selection by the AVCA. While opposing teams will undoubtedly concentrate on Breit, JSU will have many other threats as well. See story at The Jacksonville News's website: www.jaxnews.com .
