Weaver Grad Green Turning Heads
Early in JSU's Camp

He's been in camp less than a week, but Shawn Green already has made a big impression doing a pretty good impersonation of one of Jacksonville State's all-time great running backs. And it's putting the coaches in a position to have to make some tough decisions.

Specifically, do they redshirt the true freshman or play him right away? And if they do play him, is it at running back, where he set all kinds of records at Weaver, or at linebacker, where there's a great need for depth?

“As much as everybody around locally wanted to have somebody in this program special, I think they may have one,” Gamecocks head coach Jack Crowe said Friday while watching his team practice for the first time this camp in full pads. “He's just very talented. He's Oscar Bonds with about 20 more pounds.

“But having said that, the smart thing to do would be try like heck not to play him. He's a really special player. He could play anywhere, probably. We're having daily arguments about putting him at linebacker, but, boy, it's really going to be tough not to let him develop and take a redshirt year and be as special as he can be.”
