Helping Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

JSU Volunteers Needed
Monday at 8 a.m.

Volunteers from Jacksonville State University who would like to assist in preparing shelters for survivors of Hurricane Katrina may report to the McClellan work site (adjacent to the old post exchange building) at 8 a.m. Monday.

Jay Carter of the Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency advises volunteers to "come prepared to be self-sustaining throughout the day.

"You should bring your own water, tools, and any supplies you will need," he said.

Volunteers should park at the adjacent post exchange building and walk to the starship building for orientation and assignments. Evacuees will be housed within days at two former barracks (called "starships") that include a boiler plant and a former military learning center.

Directions: Enter McClellan on Baltzell Gate Road and continue east, following Baltzell around the traffic circle at the fire station and then east again to the three-way intersection and stop sign at Baltzell Rd. and Town Center Drive. Take a right onto Town Center Dr. and go approximately one-and-a-half blocks to the old PX building on the left. The work site is visible from the parking lot. Those who need further directions should call the EMA at 435-0540.

Maryann Wilson of the EMA said volunteers should call the EMA office (435-0540) this weekend to get their names added to the list of volunteer workers.
