Dr. Fred Kelley Named MCIS Dept. Head

Dr. Fred Kelley of Birmingham, professor of computer science and mathematics, will become the next head of the Department of Mathematics, Computing, and Information Sciences at Jacksonville State University.

Kelley will assume the position on Sept. 1. The post is being vacated by Mrs. Martha McCormick, who is retiring effective Sept. 1 with 21 years of service. She became department head in 1987.

Kelley has served in the MCIS department from 1990 until 1996 and from 1998 until present. He has taught a variety of courses in mathematics and computer science at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In addition, Kelley taught at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, from 1997 to 1998 and at Samford University from 1974-86. He holds a doctorate in mathematics with a major in complex analysis, a master's in mathematics, and a bachelor's in mathematics, all from the University of Alabama. In addition, he earned 30 graduate hours in computer science at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and at JSU.

Kelley serves on numerous university and departmental committees and is chair of the computer science search committee and travel committee. Kelley participates in campus organizations such as the Phi Beta Kappa graduate fellowship, the Alumni Association, and the International House Program.
