Gospel Choir to Provide Christmas Concert for Evacuees and Public

Jacksonville State University's Dr. Myrtice Collins, director of the Gospel Choir, has always led a special holiday concert every Christmas, but this year it will be even more special. The concert will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, in Leone Cole Auditorium on campus.

After hearing that more than 100 Hurricane Katrina victims were living at McClellan—people who are lonely and are away from their real home, with no family and few friends—Dr. Collins decided to do something in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. She called FEMA and arranged to have FEMA bus all of the hurricane survivors to her Gospel Choir Christmas concert. And she decided to change the focus of the concert to a fund-raising effort for evacuees.  She’s also asking everyone who comes to the concert to bring a gift for a person between the ages of 3 and 81, since that is the age range of the Katrina victims housed at McClellan.

This year's concert will be an especially “roof-raising” event.  To reach Dr. Collins for more information, call 782-5545 or e-mail her at mcollins@jsu.edu.
