A celebration of the life and contributions of service of Dr. James Fairleigh, former Jacksonville State University music department head, will be held on Sunday, October 30 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Henry Road, Anniston.

The event on Sunday will celebrate Dr. Fairleigh's life through music by featuring various choirs and instrumental chamber ensembles from JSU and First Presbyterian Church. A variety of musical selections will be performed.  The public is cordially invited to attend.

Dr. Fairleigh also served as director of music at First Presbyterian Church before he retired in 2000 from JSU. Dr. Fairleigh died in the spring of 2005 in Seneca, South Carolina.

A native of St. Joseph, Missouri, Dr. Fairleigh held an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a graduate degree from the University of Southern California and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Prior to his arrival at Jacksonville State University, he taught at Rhode Island College and Hanover College in Indiana where he was active as a performer and scholarly writer. Dr. Fairleigh oversaw the music department's growth for more than 20 years at JSU.

Scheduled to appear at the event are the JSU A Capella Choir, student instrumentalist, brass quartet, and the First Presbyterian Church Choir. Ms. Leslie Gober will also perform a rendition of "The Lord is My Shepherd," accompanied by the First Presbyterian Church Choir.
