ROTC Commissioning Ceremony July 28

Jacksonville State University's Department of Military Science will hold its summer commissioning ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on July 28 at Rowe Hall, the ROTC building, on Church Avenue.  Cadets will be receiving their officer's commission for the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserves, or National Guard. The guest speaker for the event is Jack Crowe, JSU's head football coach.

"These cadets will be a part of the next generation of military leaders," said Lt. Col. Herschel May,  commander of the JSU ROTC Battalion. "As a result of the ROTC training these young men received here at JSU, they will be able to step in and lead any unit that they may be assigned to."

The cadets will recite the commissioning oath of office and be sworn into the U.S. Army as second lieutenants during the ceremony. As the next step in their military careers, the cadets will then attend the branch officer's basic course where they will gain their military specialty.

More than 1,350 cadets have received their commissions through JSU since the first commissioning ceremony in 1950. Many have enjoyed successful military careers, and eight JSU graduates have attained the rank of general.

For more information about the commissioning ceremony, call Linda Bright at 782-5601.
