Unique iTunes pages were generated for each course; links to these unique pages may be distributed by faculty to students as a link within Blackboard courses, or even distributed via email.  Continued interest in capturing of audio and video by faculty as well as by students has spurred the development of a podcasting station within the Office of Distance Education.  Capture of audio and video during the Spring 2008 semester will be on-going, and work within this initiative is planned to increase over the next several semesters.

During the Fall 2007, the Office of Distance Education offered a number of workshops, which had recently been revised to include new information from the updated Bb system:

Blackboard Upgrade— A Blackboard upgrade to 7.3.159.29 was completed on December 17, 2007.  This upgrade included several new features and enhancements, such as the Early Warning System.  This tool is used to communicate warnings to students regarding performance in a Blackboard course.  Warnings may be based on attendance, graded performance, or late or missing assignments.  Some enhancements were made to the discussion board and My Courses module, to name a few.  An additional tool, Pronto, has been installed and is under evaluation.  Pronto is an instant messaging and voice chat tool that allows for spontaneous student-to-student and student-to-instructor communication.

SafeAssign Roll-Out— SafeAssign is a plagiarism detection tool that was installed on the Blackboard production server during August 2007.  SafeAssign is available through Blackboard for both instructor and student use.  Additionally, Blackboard course shells have been granted to non-academic groups on campus who may need to take advantage of the benefits of this tool, as well.  As papers are submitted to the SafeAssign submission area, the papers are compared across comprehensive databases for content matching.  A matching report is generated that includes the text of the uploaded manuscript along with any matching content found within a database.  The source of the matched text is provided, as well.  SafeAssign training was included in the Adding Content and Assignments workshops offered by the Office of Distance Education on September 18 from 9:15-10:45 a.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m.  Fourteen faculty attended those training sessions.  SafeAssign manuals for both instructors and faculty were created and placed in the Distance Education Faculty Group in MyJSU for faculty who were unable to attend training.

Plans for LDB Pilot—The Respondus LockDown Browser is “a custom browser that provides a secure testing environment within Blackboard…” During an online assessment, students are unable to visit other websites or access other applications on their computers.  The specialized browser also disables print functionality and the copy/paste function commonly found in various word processors and operating systems.  Over fifty faculty from various departments on campus were invited to participate in the LockDown Browser pilot.  Training sessions were held on November 12 and 15 to help faculty prepare their Blackboard exams for the special browser.  A total of eighteen faculty attended those sessions.  To date, fourteen faculty have committed to the pilot.  It is expected that additional faculty will sign up to participate in the pilot after the Spring 2008 semester begins.  The pilot begins on January 1, 2008 and ends on April 30, 2008.  Post-pilot evaluations of the browser will be given to both faculty and students who use the browser.

LCMS Pilot – The Office of Distance Education agreed to be a pilot group participant in the Luminis Content Management System (LCMS) project.  Mr. Chris Casey and Ms. Misty Cobb attended training sessions throughout the Fall 2007 semester regarding the LCMS.  On December 18 and 19, 2007, Mr. Casey and Ms. Cobb attended two four-hour sessions to begin migrating current web pages and creating new web pages on the LCMS.  The readiness review date for the new web pages has been set for February 4, 2008 and the go live date is tentatively noted for early March of 2008 for the pilot groups, including the Office of Distance Education.

Videoconferencing

The Office of Distance Education sponsored the Videoconference Open House on December 4, 2007.  Community members, as well as JSU faculty and staff, participated in a demonstration of the new, state-of-the-art videoconferencing equipment, which was installed at the beginning of the Fall 2007 semester.  This modern equipment is now being utilized at all JSU on-campus and off-campus sites.  JSU now has the capability of reaching sites throughout the world with two-way interactive audio and video communication capabilities.  This technology has great value to the educational community as well as governmental and business applications.

Equipment removed from videoconferencing sites on- and off-campus was donated to a number of departments across campus at JSU during the Fall 2007 semester who indicated a need for these materials. This equipment includes large-screen televisions, media cabinets, and more. Cooperation and resource-sharing among DE and these other departments serves to enhance the needs of the university as a whole.
