JSU Drama Features Children's Theatre Production of Little Red Reading Hood

The Jacksonville State University Drama Department presents its final show of the summer of 2008—a Children's Theatre production of the classic tale of LITTLE RED READING HOOD. JSU Drama professor Eric Traynor, who formerly served as the Artistic Director of Storybook Theatre in Greensboro, NC, is directing the play. The play revolves around Little Red who plans a visit to her grandmother and does entail a character identified as the big bad wolf. Of course, as in all of Eric Traynor’s adaptations of the classic stories, that’s about where the similarity ends.

The play is a comical rendition of Little Red Riding Hood, complete with characters Wolfie Wolf, Harry Hyena, Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, the Piano Guy and a Reading Bug that chases Little Red all through the woods. Children in the audience are prompted to participate as instructed as the narrative proceeds.

The theme “Read More Books” is cleverly woven into the set, appearing in the trunk of a tree in the woods and a shelf on the bookshelf in Grandma’s house. Little Red even carries a bag full of books, including Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss and other children’s books.

This delightful variation is guaranteed to make all, ages 2 to 92, have a great theatre experience.

Performances run July 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 at 2 p.m. daily. All tickets are $5.00 and may purchased in advance by phoning 782-5648. Mastercard, Visa, Discover, personal checks, and cash are accepted. The box office closes promptly at 2 so please be early.

The production will be held on the mainstage of Ernest Stone Performing Arts Center, Corner of Church Avenue and 11th Street.
