JSU Spring 2008 Graduation Candidates
and Commencement Ceremony

Jacksonville State University’s 2008 Spring commencement will be held Friday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Paul Snow Stadium. The faculty will lead the processional into Paul Snow Stadium where the candidates will be seated in their assigned seats. Candidates will be announced individually, photographed, and presented with a JSU diploma while crossing the stage. President Meehan will confer the degrees.

The conferring of degrees is a special moment that includes moving the tassel on the mortarboard from right to left. To ensure that all graduates, the last to cross the stage as well as the first, are appropriately recognized, guests are asked to remain seated throughout the ceremony. After the ceremony, President Meehan will be available to reenact the awarding of diplomas for family photographs.  So that graduates and members of the audience may clearly view the proceedings, we ask that close up photographs and taping be delayed until after the ceremony.

Dr. Harvey H. (Hardy) Jackson III, Professor of History and Chair of the History and Foreign Languages Department at Jacksonville State University, will deliver the commencement address.

After earning his bachelor of arts from Birmingham Southern College, Jackson earned his master’s from the University of Alabama and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. His most recent book, Inside Alabama: A Personal History of My State, won the Alabama Historical Association’s 2006 Clinton Jackson Coley Award for the best book on Alabama history with a local emphasis. He is past president of both the Alabama Historical Association and the Alabama Association of Historians.

Jackson is the author, co-author or co-editor of 11 books on various aspects of Southern history. He has written over 30 articles that have appeared in scholarly journals and anthologies, including The William and Mary Quarterly, The Journal of Southern History, The Alabama Review, The Georgia Historical Quarterly, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Atlanta History and Southern Studies.

Jackson has also made scholarly presentations at meetings of the Southern Historical Association, the American Historical Association, the Georgia Historical Association, the Alabama Historical Association and more.

Currently Jackson serves on the Editorial Board of the Anniston Star and writes editorials and a weekly column for the paper. In 2007 he won the Alabama Press Association award for the best "Human Interest" column.

JSU welcomes the candidate’s family and friends to the commencement ceremony. Ample seating is available at Paul Snow Stadium. Parking is available on the north, east, and west sides of the stadium. Handicapped parking is available on the north side of the stadium. Ample handicapped and wheelchair seating is available at Gate C in the stadium. Sign language interpreting will be provided on the stage.

The ceremony will be televised live on WJXS-TV24 (local Cable One Channel 9). Other cable companies with TV 24 include Cable One (Anniston, Oxford, Munford, Pell City, and Jacksonville); Charter (Piedmont, Southside and Heflin); Leesburg Cable; Collinsville Cable; Lookout Cable (Gaylesville); and Cherokee Co. Cable (Centre). Family and friends can also view the graduation ceremony live from their home computers. There will be a link available on the JSU web site: www.jsu.edu.  The ceremony will be archived for two weeks after commencement.

In the event the weather prevents an outdoor rehearsal or exercise, the commencement activity will be held in the Mathews Coliseum. The commencement will remain at 6:30 p.m. with the location changed to the Mathews Coliseum. Local radio stations and campus security will announce any decision to locate the commencement activity in the Mathews Coliseum should weather become a factor. The top eleven graduates all graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA). These distinguished graduates are Julie Marie Frasier, of Gadsden, AL; Kathryn N. Greer, of Jacksonville, AL; Wendy Dumas Gregory, of Altoona, AL; Jade C. Hill, of Piedmont, AL; Whittany A. Hodnett, of Lanett, AL; Rebekah Fran Holley, of Weaver, AL; Bobbie Davis Maddox, of Gadsden, AL; Erin Marie Marbut, of Gadsden, AL; Astin Leigh Mobley, of Ranburne, AL; David Michael Robbins, of Boaz, AL; and Tiffany Renea Tolleson, of Boaz, AL.

Four of these graduates—Ms. Frasier, Ms. Mobley, Ms. Hodnett and Ms. Tolleson are all receiving the Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) degree. Three of these four have a major in Elementary Education. Ms. Tolleson’s major is Mathematics.

Two of the eleven are receiving the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. These are Rebekah Fran Holley with a double major in Communication and Sociology and Bobbie Davis Maddox with a major in Liberal Studies.

The other five top graduates are receiving the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Of these five, Kathryn N. Greer and Wendy Dumas Gregory graduate with a major in Biology. Two others, Jade C. Hill and Erin Marie Marbut, graduate with a major in Psychology. David Micheal Robbins graduates with a major in Chemistry.

The awarding of honors to graduates by JSU is presented as follows:  The designation "cum laude" will be engrossed upon the diplomas of graduating students who obtain a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.69 quality points on hours attempted; "magna cum laude," for a grade point average of 3.7 to 3.89; and "summa cum laude," for a grade point average of 3.9 to 4.0.  The designation "with special honors in {major}" will be engrossed upon the diplomas of those who maintain an average of 3.5 in their major field and 3.25 overall.  (Only undergraduate students are eligible for Latin or special honors.)

Students receiving degrees are listed by program level of study completed—Undergraduate/Graduate—and also geographically by hometown/county for Alabama’s in-state students, by state and city for out-of state students, and finally by country for foreign students.  Graduates of JSU’s Spring 2007 Semester are listed below.

Eligibility for honors will be determined at the conclusion of the degree program; therefore, honors published in the commencement program do not include the last semester of enrollment.
