AL High Schools Northeast Regional Basketball Tournament

The Alabama High School Athletic Association Northeast Regional basketball tournament kicks off Tuesday at Jacksonville State University's Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Being in our backyard won't be the only thing that will give this tournament a local flare. Of the 48 teams, 19 hail from The Star's coverage area.

Winners from first-round games, played Tuesday through Thursday, will advance to Friday and Saturday's championship rounds. Winners of those games advance to the Final Four, the state tournament, at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Complex beginning Monday, Feb. 25.


Tuesday's games

Class 1A

Girls: Spring Garden vs. Ragland, 3 p.m.

Boys: Spring Garden vs. Holy Family, 4:30 p.m.

Girls: Gaston vs. Jacksonville Christian, 6 p.m.

Boys: Collinsville vs. Faith Christian, 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday's games

Class 5A

Girls: J.O. Johnson vs. Talladega, 9 a.m.

Boys: J.O. Johnson vs. Anniston, 10:30 a.m.

Girls: Scottsboro vs. Anniston, noon

Boys: Butler vs. Talladega, 1:30 p.m.

Class 2A

Girls: Piedmont vs. Ohatchee, 3 p.m.

Boys: Piedmont vs. Westbrook Christian, 4:30 p.m.

Girls: Ider vs. Woodland, 6 p.m.

Boys: White Plains vs. Ranburne, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday's games

Class 3A

Boys: Madison Academy vs. Weaver, 1:30 p.m.

Class 4A

Girls: Boaz vs. Jacksonville, 3 p.m.

Boys: Cherokee County vs. Saks 4:30 p.m.
