While getting the 2006 Emory Jazz Festival underway, Gary Motley said, "I try to give my students an appreciation for the art form of
jazz and the people who developed this genre. Jazz is a uniquely American art form that celebrates the sum of life’s experiences.”
Motley also stated he was exposed to jazz at an early age by his mother who loved to play gospel and classical music on the piano.
He said his mother's goal was to give her children a love and appreciation for the arts.
