JSU Field Schools' Inner City Kids into Nature Camp

JSU's assistant director for Field Schools Renee Morrison shows off a king snake to some young campers.

This is a special nature camp developed by JSU Field Schools’ Renee Morrison, organized through Hobson City Mayor’s Office, sponsored by Alabama Gas Corporation, Wachovia Bank Community Outreach, and USFS Shoal Creek District, to promote scientific exploration and discovery to inner city children.

Date:     June 19-20, 2007
Where:  USFS Shoal Creek District Coleman Lake Recreation Area
Time:     9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Fee:       Scholarship only

These nature camps for inner city kids have netted the Jacksonville State University Field Schools two national awards from the U.S. Forest Service: the Excellence in Interpretation Award in 2004 and the Nature Watch Award in 2005.

The camps help low-income minority youths discover natural places in Alabama and educate them on career options in science and math through a partnership between JSU and the Forest Service. The camps are free for participants with approved scholarship applications.
