Academe Meeting Focuses
on Service Learning Strategy

Dr. Teresa Reed, Jacksonville State University Department of English, will present "Why Do I Have to Volunteer in My Freshman Composition Class? An Experiment in Service Learning at JSU," at the March Academe meeting on Thursday, March 15, in Room 1103C, Houston Cole Library, at 3:15 p.m.

According to Dr. Reed, "Service learning is a teaching strategy that makes volunteering part of the work that students have to do for their class." Dr. Reed taught her first service learning class in fall of 2006. During her Academe presentation, she will provide a rationale for service learning, talk about the benefits for students, and the problems she has encountered along the way. She will also demonstrate "how service learning classes can benefit JSU."

Please plan to attend this meeting of Academe to learn more about how to make the college classroom a place in which all the learning is not textbook learning, but is learning about service to others as well.
