"Bountiful" Trip Next Offering from CAST

"The Trip to Bountiful" pretty much defines the word “bittersweet.”

It tells the story of Carrie, an aging woman who’s tired of living in a Houston apartment with her overly controlling daughter. Carrie wants to take one last trip back to Bountiful, Texas, where she grew up and still considers her home, but her children won’t let her.

So each month when her Social Security check arrives, Carrie tries to make an escape and head for her hometown.

Eventually, she succeeds and the play follows her on her final journey to Bountiful.

The play was written by Horton Foote, who also wrote the screenplays for To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies. Geraldine Page won an Oscar as Best Actress for the 1985 movie version.

For CAST, the part of Carrie is played by Sylvia S. Malone, a retired speech and English instructor from Jacksonville State University who worked with the JSU drama department over the years. Previously she’s performed in such productions as Antigone, Medea, Look Homeward Angel and Hansel and Gretel.
