Estefania Cuevas Receives
National Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship

Estefania Cuevas

The Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship Committee recently awarded an endowed $3,000 scholarship for full-time undergraduate study in the 2006-2007 academic year to JSU student Estefania Cuevas, of Anniston, AL. Estefania was inducted into the Jacksonville State University chapter of the National Freshman Honor Society Phi Eta Sigma in the Spring of 2005.

At the end of February this year, the JSU honor society, after reviewing several local applications, selected Estefania Cuevas's scholarship application as the one to send to the national level to be considered for one of the national scholarships. In May Estefania and the local chapter were both notified that she had been chosen to receive a $3,000 scholarship.

This is the largest award in the chapter's history to be bestowed upon a Jacksonville State member of Phi Eta Sigma by their national scholarship committee. Ms. Cuevas's award illustrates, once again, that Jacksonville State students are very competitive and successful both locally and nationally.

Ms. Cuevas is currently a junior studying music education with a concentration in voice. She has performed principal roles with the JSU Opera Theater in Dido and Aeneas, Lunatics and Lovers, and The Gondoliers. She has also performed with the Gadsden Community Theater in Beauty and The Beast and will perform in The Secret Garden as "Lily" during July 28-30 and August 4-6. For more information on The Secret Garden, visit www.wallacehall.org .

Upon graduation, Ms. Cuevas plans to pursue a master's degree in vocal performance and later obtain a doctorate degree to teach voice at the college level.
