Relay for Life Event Sets Fund-raising Record

There is a sharp dichotomy to the Relay for Life: It is one part festive celebration and one part memorial service — all wrapped up in hope for the future. The people at the event had reason to celebrate. The event raised more than $430,000 for cancer research — the highest total in Calhoun County history, according to American Cancer Society Development Representative Lisa Haugen. The amount greatly exceeds the $280,000 goal that had been set by the Calhoun County Relay for Life Committee. Last year’s event raised $258,000.

“We’re very proud,” said Jacksonville State University President Bill Meehan, who chaired the Relay for Life Committee. “I think we had wonderful people on the committee, great team captains, great teams, and the community really came out and showed their support.”
