JSU Color Guard Takes the Bronze
in WGI World Championships

The JSU Center Stage Winter Guard captured the highly sought after Independent Open class Bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Guard International World championships held in Dayton, Ohio. More than 30,000 spectators were on hand to see the guard under the direction of Mr. Rodney Bailey take the bronze medal in the open classification scoring a 94.6, defeating color guards from around the US and Canada. This is the highest the guard has ever placed in national competition and is the first guard from the state of Alabama to capture a medal in Independent Open Class Competition at world Championships.

This season has truly been a whirlwind of events for the guard. After the Atlanta regional in February, they were promoted to the open classification because of their outstanding performance and skill. Even after their promotion they still went undefeated through regular season competition. With their successful regular season, as well as their medal placement at World Championships, the JSU Center Stage Winter Guard has, without a doubt, put Jacksonville State University on the map in the Winter Guard arena, where education is the foundation for success!

Winter Guard International (WGI) is an experience where competition is based in education. WGI was founded in 1977 to draw together the growing winter color guard activity, standardize rules, and provide leadership and guidance.

Now there is an international organization that offers:
  • Standardized judging criteria within the activity.
  • Improved communication.
  • Cooperation of local circuit organizations.
  • An Educational Division offering clinics, printed and video materials regarding the color guard and indoor percussion activities.
  • A network of Regional contests in the U.S., Canada, and Europe culminating in an annual International Championship in April.
Winter guard exists in the United States, Canada, Holland, Japan, England, Korea, Germany, Ireland, and South Africa.
