JSU Hosting First-ever Home Division I Track Meet

Jacksonville State will host the University’s first-ever home Division I track meet this Saturday at the University Track and Field Complex, located adjacent to Pete Mathews Coliseum.

“We are looking forward to an exciting college meet,” said Jacksonville State head coach Steve Ray. “There will be some great athletes from all the schools participating and we feel very fortunate to have the schools travel to our place.”

Nine teams are comitted to participating in the meeting on Saturday, including: Bryan College (TN); Carthage College (WI) (women); Clark-Atlanta; Kennesaw State; Morehouse College (men); Stillman College; Tennessee Tech; Trinity Christian College (IL); West Georgia.

The meet features a list of athletes that own national championships and school records, including JSU’s Eboni Matthews, who was the 36th fastest woman in the United States in last year’s 400 meter dash (53.52).

Also competing in the meet will be two-time 100-meter hurdle national champion Shea’na Grigsby (Carthage College) and Keith Moffatt (Morehouse College), who set an NCAA Division II Championships record with a 7- foot-6-inch high jump.

“For any program to be successful your kids have to compete at home,” said Ray. “We have kids that have traveled all four years and they are excited about finally running in front of a home crowd.

“I feel that the meet is a great opportunity for the university and is another great sporting outlook for the students,” said Ray. “No one wants to lose at home. Everyone steps up at home.”

Saturday’s events will begin at 10 a.m. and admission is free for all fans.
