JSU Colorguard Goes for Gold in World Championships

The JSU Center Stage Winterguard took its 11th consecutive win this past weekend at the 2006 Winterguard International Mid South Regional held in Nashville, TN. Thousands of spectators were on hand to see the guard under the direction of Mr. Rodney Bailey take first place in prelims scoring an 89.95 and then again in finals, scoring a 90.8.

With their win this past weekend, JSU is now ranked first in the world in the Independent Open classification of WGI. Next week the guard travels to Dayton, Ohio for the 2006 Winterguard International World Championships where they will compete with colorguards from around the world for top honors.

Winterguard (WGI) is an experience where competition is based in education. WGI was founded in 1977 to draw together the growing winter colorguard activity, standardize rules, and provide leadership and guidance.

Now there is an international organization that offers:
  • Standardized judging criteria within the activity.
  • Improved communication.
  • Cooperation of local circuit organizations.
  • An Educational Division offering clinics, printed and video materials regarding the color guard and indoor percussion activities.
  • A network of Regional contests in the U.S., Canada, and Europe culminating in an annual International Championship in April.
Winter guard exists in the United States, Canada, Holland, Japan, England, Korea, Germany, Ireland, and South Africa.

The 2006 World Championships will be held in Dayton, OH, April 6, 7, and 8, when competitors from the U.S., Canada, Japan, Holland, and England will compete in six classes for Scholastic and Independent groups. More than 75,000 fans enjoy this activity at 24 Regional competitions and World Championships. Another 100,000 fans support more than 600 local contests throughout the world.

This is the highest level of competition for colorguard and we hope you are able to make the trip as JSU goes for the gold in Dayton! For information on tickets and schedules please visit www.wgi.org.
