1948 Crime Rate: 0

You're looking at the entire police force of Jacksonville in 1948. Police Chief Howard Trammell, left, poses with officer Hess. To the right of the car is reputedly Jacksonville's first city-owned fire plug. The photographer was facing northwest, looking across the public square. Behind the light pole is the Princess Theater, and in the distance at right is the office of Dr. Francis. Photo courtesy of Homer Barnwell, who says he remembers that the crime rate back then "was almost zero." For more Jacksonville images, go to my photo page.
