The Iris, 1930s




In the 1930s, Jacksonville had a second movie theater on the square -- The Iris. The present-day Jacksonville Mortgage Services resides in that spot downtown, next door to Craven's Barber Shop and the old Tavern on the northeast side of the square. The photo at top is courtesy of Darwin and Elaine Hardison, and the photo below is from the collection of Edwerta Carpenter. Today there's only one remaining lion keystone from the old arches, and it is above the barber shop door (last two photos by Al Harris).
