Dr. Helen Bush Caver Dies in Friday Accident

Longtime Jacksonville State University Associate Professor and assistant librarian Helen Bush Caver died Friday afternoon. According to reports, Dr. Caver's Jeep was traveling north on Alabama 21 when her vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with another car.

Dr. Caver was a librarian specializing in children's literature and an educator at JSU for more than 28 years. Ms. Carver earned a master's degree from Atlanta University in 1969 and a doctorate from the University of Sarasota in 1989. Ms. Caver accepted a position at Talladega College in the Savery Library in 1998 after retiring from JSU. She joined forces with her former roommates, Rep. Barbara Boyd (D-Anniston) and then Talladega College President Marguerite Archie-Hudson in an effort to restore the old Savery Library.

"She taught the best children's literature class you could ask for," said Georgia Calhoun, who once took a course from Dr. Caver at JSU. "She was a very vibrant person, outgoing, and just lovable."

The Distinguished Black Woman Award from the Alabama SCLC and a Calhoun County Leadership Award are among the many recognitions she received during her life. She was a member Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Goodson Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
