JSU Performance of Henry Purcell's Opera  Dido and Aeneas

2 March 2005 — The Jacksonville State University Chamber Singers will perform Dido and Aeneas, an opera by Henry Purcell, on Tuesday, 5 April at 7:00 p.m. in the Ernest Stone Performing Arts Center. 

Loosely based on Virgil's Aeneid, the opera tells the story of the conflict between love and destiny through the eyes of Dido, the Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, a Trojan prince and a colorful cast of witches, courtiers, and sailors.

This opera is considered by many to be Purcell's masterpiece and the first true English opera. The cast of characters are Dido, Judy Holt (Jacksonville); Aeneas, Desmond Hubbard (Ohatchee); Belinda, Kimberly Miller (Rome, GA); Sorceress, Jessica Smith, (Hartselle); 2nd Woman, Britani Mason (Birmingham); Sailor, Layke Rowell, (Albertville); Witches—Kristina Shetter (Alexandria), Estefania Cuevas (Anniston), Jean Allen (Epworth, GA), and Elizabeth DeGaetano (Marietta, GA); The Spirit, Pamela Shirley (Dallas, GA); and chorus members—Amy Hulsey (Jacksonville), Amanda Robinson (Fairhope), Argenia Keeling (Athens), Leslie Gober (Muscle Shoals), Tiffany Kurpiel (Lindstrom, MN), D'Arerey Jarrod Lee (Sylacauga), Jason Wright (Anniston), Michael McDonald, (Montgomery) Rocky Tejada (Alabaster), Damian Fluker (Anniston), Isaac Pullen (Huntsville), David Jacobs (Villa Rica, GA), and John Gladden (Collinsville).

Stone Center is located at the corner of Church Street and 11th Avenue on the northeast corner of the JSU Campus. This performance is free and open to the public. For further information, please contact the JSU choral office at 782-5544.
