Higher Education Day is March 3

3 February, 2005 — The Higher Education Partnership would like to encourage university leaders to attend Higher Education Day on March 3.

The day begins with a rally to be held on the front steps of the Alabama State House, followed by a free barbeque lunch on the lawn of the State Capitol.  Following lunch, students interested in careers or internships are invited and encouraged to attend the Alabama Jobs 2005 Career and Internship Fair at the RSA Activities Center, 3 blocks down from the State Capitol.  Students are encouraged to bring resumes. The job fair is sponsored by the Partnership, Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Association of Colleges and Employers.

Why should you attend the Higher Ed Day Rally?

The Higher Education Day Rally is Montgomery’s largest annual advocacy rally.

The large numbers of attendees let legislators know that we are concerned about the funding of higher education and we have a voice that should be heard.

The budget that was developed by the legislature was not favorable to the state’s universities. Due to the efforts to restore funding to K-12 transportation, textbooks and the “Reading Initiative,” the universities found their percentage of the new dollars was hurt.

We must let our legislators know that per-student funding must be competitive. For every one dollar invested in our students, there is a ten dollar return.

It is important that legislators understand the message that “Universities are the Foundation for Alabama’s Future.

Higher education has a message and by attending the Higher Education Day Rally, your voice is being heard.
