International House Presents Awards

April 22, 2004 -- On Monday, April 12, the International House held its annual trustees meeting accompanied by their awards banquet. The IH awards were presented as follows:

The Dr. James H. Jones Award was presented to Santos Cáceres of Argentina. This award included a watch paid for by a fund set up by the Daugette family to honor Dr. Jones. Santos also was awarded the Sharon Lindsey Dempsey Award. This award is voted on by International House residents and is given to "the best friend and contributor" in the House. Santos will graduate in December 2004. He has an older brother who also participated in the International House Program and graduated from JSU. Santos formerly played golf for JSU and is a resident assistant at the International House.

The Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs Scholarship Award was presented to Gordana Lakcevic of Montenegro. Gordana will address the state meeting of the AFWC at Auburn University on April 23. Gordana is currently Secretary of the International Student Organization, and was recently elected President of the ISO for 2004.

The Dr. John R. Stewart Award was presented to Nuria Sala-Carral of Spain. Nuria is a past president of the Rotaract Club, which develops professional and leadership skills, emphasizes respect for the rights of others, and recognizes the dignity and value of all useful occupations as opportunities to serve. She is a business major and is currently an RA for the International House.

Alpha Kappa Delta, the international Sociology honor society, invited Graciela Garcia of El Salvador to become a member. Alpha Kappa Delta honors excellent academic students in the Sociology program. Membership is considered to be an outstanding achievement and a great honor. Graciela also made the Dean's List for Fall 2003 and is the current Vice President of Rotaract.

Viviana Yaluk of Nicaragua was presented the Spain-Hickman Scholarship from Rotary District 6860, which covers northeastern Alabama. Frank E. Spain and Roy D. Hickman were from District 6860 and became Presidents of Rotary International. Viviana is currently the International Student Organization's second vice president.

The Anniston Rotary Award was presented to Elizabeth Maduka of Nigeria. Elizabeth is currently the ISO Treasurer. She is a pre-nursing student. Her parents are diplomats. This life led her to graduate from high school in Venezuela.
