Social Work Conference Presents Program on AIDS


JACKSONVILLE -- March 1, 2001 -- The Baccalaureate Social Work Program at Jacksonville State University is celebrating Social Work Month by hosting their 20th Annual Social Work Conference on March 16, 2001, on the 11th floor of the Houston Cole Library. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the conference concludes at 2:30 p.m..

Dr. Patricia Clark-Ellis will make two presentations on AIDS. One will focus on psychological and legal implications of women with AIDS and one will focus on multi-level interventions with HIV-positive women. Dr. Clark-Ellis is the Interim Associate Dean in the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Sacramento. She received her J.D. from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee. Her community activities include serving as a volunteer and legal advisor for the Women's Affected AIDS Group, associated with the Sacramento AIDS Foundation and providing pro bono legal services to low-income Californians through the Volunteer Legal Services Program. Dr. Clark-Ellis is a member of the California State Bar Association and the National Association of Social Workers.

Another presentation will focus on the current regional trends in HIV/AIDS. Scott Batey, MSW; Rita Flegal, BA; and Karen Phillips, MSW of the Calhoun County AIDS Services Center will serve on a panel for this workshop.

Cyndi Caine, Calhoun County Judicial Volunteer Program Coordinator and Tom Wright, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for Calhoun County will discuss Juvenile Diversion Programs. The luncheon will include remarks by Dean James Adams of the University of Alabama School of Social Work and Ms. Lori Bernard, Executive Director of the Alabama Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. NASW will present awards at the luncheon. Ms. Donna K. Smith, University Field Coordinator for the BSW Program at JSU and Robyn Snider, Instructor in Social Work at JSU, will offer training for Field Instructors.
