Third Annual Clothesline Project, WISEFest Scheduled for Thursday

WISE (Women's Issues Support and Empowerment) will host the third annual Clothesline Project (CLP) as well as WISEfest on Thursday, October 30,  from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Theron Montgomery Building.

The Clothesline Project started in 1990 as a means to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang their shirts on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women.  Over the past two years, WISE has collected close to 200 T-shirts made by people in our area directly affected by domestic violence.

This year, in addition to the CLP, WISE will host a festival to celebrate women and the men who love them. Speakers will present on a number of related topics, including the "Confessions of a Feminist Man." There will be discussions about women in sports, art, sex work, history, literature, religion, and the work place. There will also be hands-on workshops for stress management, writing, and assertiveness training.

Throughout the day there will be free makeovers, raffles, stage make-up, face painting, student groups, social agencies and more.  In addition, from 5-6 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil for peace.  Everyone is encouraged to join this remembrance and celebration of women and the men who love them.

In the event of rain, this free event will be moved to the Merrill Building.
