JSU Featured in Cookbook

The Scholarly Gourmet: A Collection of Recipes from Alabama’s Public Universities is a joint effort between the Higher Education Partnership and the thirteen public universities in Alabama, including Jacksonville State University. A celebration of the Higher Education Partnership’s ten year anniversary, the cookbook offers a slice of university life.

In the South, a cookbook is certainly an appropriate tool through which to celebrate. From the traditional “blessing of the food” to the after-dinner coffee, people of Alabama congregate and celebrate around food. We love to share wonderful stories around the dinner table. We pass along great traditions while we dine. It is for each of these reasons that this collection of favorite recipes, alumni profiles and institutional icons provides a perfect way to celebrate.

Filled with recipes, stories and photographs of famous alumni, The Scholarly Gourmet also includes photos and history of university landmarks, little-known facts of each university and over 250 recipes from faculty, staff and alumni of Alabama’s public universities. Well-known radio personalities Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey, better known as just “Rick and Bubba” are the featured alumni from Jacksonville State University.

Other featured alumni include actors Jim Nabors (University of Alabama) and George Lindsey (University of North Alabama), football greats John Stallworth (Alabama A & M University) and Demarcus Ware (Troy University). Authors Cassandra King Conroy (University of Montevallo), Deborah Ford (University of North Alabama), Bill Cobb (University of West Alabama) and Winston Groom (University of Alabama) tell stories of their lives in Alabama. Other featured alumni include former executive-editor of Redbook Magazine, Judy Culbreth (University of South Alabama), civil rights activist, Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth (Alabama State University), astronauts Jim Voss (Auburn University), Jan Davis (University of Alabama in Huntsville) and Larry DeLucas (University of Alabama at Birmingham) and children’s advocate Sue McInnish (Auburn University Montgomery).

The Scholarly Gourmet is a beautiful book that will provide for hours of great reading and cooking. The cookbook is available for the cost $22.95 plus tax, shipping and handling. Books can be purchased through the Higher Education Partnership office at 2 North Jackson Street, Montgomery. Order forms are also available by going to the Partnership’s website at www.higheredpartners.org. Orders can also be sent by email to partners@higheredpartners.org.
