JSU Sociology Club to Host
Congo Teach-In on March 25

Civilians in eastern Congo, particularly women and girls, are targets of conscience-shocking brutality and sexual violence. Every day, they face a harrowing array of threats from armed militias, the military, and even the police who are supposed to protect them. Understanding the reasons why life has become so dangerous for women in eastern Congo is an essential first step in helping to end the violence and create a more hopeful future.

The JSU Sociology Club is hosting a Congo-Teach In presented by Dr. Tina Deshotels. The Teach-In is a presentation about the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The purpose is to educate you, your campuses and communities about the history and current situation in the DRC where women are bearing the brunt of the vicious war in the region. The presentation gives specific tools designed to motivate the public to put pressure on elected officials and raise awareness and funds for V-Day projects on the ground in the DRC.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. on the 11th floor of Houston Cole Library. This event is free and open to the public.

Speaker Bio: Tina Deshotels is an assistant professor of sociology at JSU. Her speciality areas of research are theory, gender and deviance. She is faculty advisor for the student group WISE and JSU Students for Equality.
