Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society Hosts Annual Faculty Scholar Lecture

All Jacksonville State University students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public, are invited to join the Epsilon Pi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an international honor society for English majors, as it proudly presents its annual Faculty Scholar Lecture on Tuesday, March 10, at 3:15 p.m. in Room 230 Stone Center.

Dr. Steven Whitton, Professor of English, will speak on "Huie's War and Hollywood Women: The War Novels of William Bradford Huie on Film." He will look at two war novels by Mr. Huie, an Alabama author, in which "Lt. Commander James Monroe Madison (a fictional representation of Huie himself)" meets the characters Mamie Stover (The Revolt of Mamie Stover) and Emily Barham (The Americanization of Emily). These two women, from the time of World War II, were quite different-- Mamie, a free spirit, and Emily, a "staid" British woman. According to Dr. Whitton, "when Hollywood turned the novels into films, one of the women was a cliché; the other just might even be better than Huie's version."

In his talk, Dr. Whitton will look at both the print and film versions of the books. You won't want to miss this literary excursion into the World War II era.

The event is free and open to the public.
