OVC strong in out-of-conference games

The Ohio Valley Conference had a good week, going 8-2 against FCS opponents. The first two games of the day were two losses for the OVC with Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky losing.

Austin Peay (0-3) went on the road to get beat at Chattanooga by the score 42-10. Austin Peay couldn’t slow a high-octane Mocs offense that came into the game averaging 271.5 yards on the ground.

It was a Top 25 FCS matchup in Richmond, KY between the #25 Eastern Kentucky (1-2) and #21 Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers won 52-31, both had good offensive days. Coastal’s quarterback Alex Ross completed 19-of-28 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. For EKU, McClain was 15-for-34 for 233 yards. He tossed two touchdowns and one interception.

Tennessee Tech (2-1) had a come from behind victory against Hampton, winning 30-27. Tech turned over the ball three times in its own end of the field, leading to three Hampton scores, and the home team Pirates used those opportunities to lead the Golden Eagles throughout the game.

#9 Eastern Illinois (3-0) beat #16 Illinois State 57-24 in the lopsided 102nd meeting of the MidAmerican Classic. EIU wide reciever Erik Lora had ten catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns, his third catch of the day made him the OVC’s all-time career reception record holder. Jimmy Garoppolo set the single game touchdown throwing school record with seven, he broke current Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo’s record of six.The biggest number was posted by the Panthers entire offensive unit as they amassed 739 yards of total offense, throwing for 491 and rushing for 248. 

That number broke the previous school record of 683 set by current Saints coach Sean Payton and company against Winona State back in 1986. Garoppolo finished his day 26-of-41 for 480 yards and seven touchdowns.

Murray State (2-1) completed an improbable comeback against Missouri State and won 41-38. Murray State had an impressive second half by scoring 35 points. Racer quarterback Maikhail Miller was 24-for-33 for 272 yards and five touchdowns and led the game winning drive late in the game.

UT-Martin (2-1) defeated Central Arkansas 24-23.UT Martin led by as many as 14 points at the halftime break but after UCA cut the deficit to one point, the Bears had a 42-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds left blocked.

Tennessee State (2-1) won the 24th Annual Southern Heritage Classic by defeating Jackson State 26-16. The TSU defense forced six turnovers in the game.
