A Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is “a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and/or the environment supporting student learning and accomplishing the mission of the institution (SACSCOC, 2011, Handbook for Institutions Seeking Reaffirmation).” Jacksonville State University has further defined our QEP as a course of action that will focus on improving student-learning outcomes that will provide our graduates with 21st century critical thinking skills.
What is the QEP about?
JSU's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) is a five-year program designed to train faculty to foster 21st-century learning skills, with an emphasis on critical thinking and how the use of technology can improve students' academic abilities. Those of us on the committee asked ourselves how we can usefully and fruitfully revise our teaching strategies to meet the needs and expectations of the millennial generation. Starting in the early part of the spring 2014 semester, the QEP committee will take applications for those interested faculty members who would like to become mentors in their departments, their colleges, and the university-wide community. These mentors will receive a course reduction and more tangible benefits and will subsequently be immersed in training during the time they would otherwise be teaching and preparing to teach and will continue their responsibilities into the next generation of mentors. The training will focus on learning-centered approaches to teaching and in use of technology, specifically the iPad. Many faculty across the campus are already more informally undertaking such innovative approaches to instruction; the QEP is JSU's way of showing faculty and students just how valuable such work is.
