JSU Jazz Ensemble I Records Second CD "Extra Credit" |
Jamie M. Eubanks JSU News Bureau JACKSONVILLE -- October 20, 2000 -- The Jazz Ensemble I at Jacksonville State University has recorded its second CD Extra Credit. "Extra Credit" is the title track which was written by Jim McNeely of New York. The CD includes a mix of traditional and contemporary jazz tunes played by JSU's Jazz Ensemble, who are mostly music majors at JSU. It was directed and produced by Chris Culver, Assistant Professor of Music at JSU. Culver arranged one of the songs on the CD titled "Friday Night at the Cadillac Club," in which Culver plays a trombone solo. "This was a great learning experience for these students," commented Culver. "Many of the students had never been in a recording studio before. However, they were very prepared for this. Many of the songs recorded were first takes." The students practiced this music for only a semester-and-a-half. JSU's Friends of Music helped sponsor the recording. Bates Bro. Recording Studio in Hueytown, Alabama recorded the album. "The CD also allowed JSU to showcase the talents and strengths of some of our soloists," continued Culver. "Jazz deals with a lot of improvisations, and our students perform it well." Students who performed on the album include: Jeff Hiley, tenor saxophone; David Camwell, alto and soprano sax; John Risse, trumpet; Jeremy Coates, bass; David Camwell, alto sax; J.T. Spann, Guitar; Princeton Reeves, drums; Robert Patrick, tenor sax; Nathan Holaway, alto sax; Malin Tate, trumpet; Mark Fifer, piano. Songs include: "Bang That Wall Harvey," "Night Visions," "305," "Moose the Mooch," "In Your Tender Care," "The Umpire Strikes Back," "Friday Night at the Cadillac Club," "Mission to Monterey," "Extra Credit," and "La Nina Nueva." National ads are also being published that recruit musicians for the Jazz Studies program at Jacksonville State University. "The word is getting out about how great our program is here at JSU," stated Culver. CD's have been sent to Jazz Times and Down Beat magazines. They will review them and publish the results. The CD's can be purchased through the campus bookstore or by contacting Chris Culver at 256-782-5883 or cculver@jsu.edu. |
