About Writing Workshops

The JSU Writing Center offers large-group workshops covering various writing-related concepts and topics throughout the academic year. JSU community members (faculty, staff, and students) can attend the workshops in-person or virtually via Teams.

Fall 2023 Workshops

August 29: Technology for Education
In this workshop, we will cover the basics of different word-processing software including Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Additionally, we will discuss the different capabilities of PCs vs. Macs for completing writing assignments.

September 5: Writing Habits of Success
In this workshop, we will discuss time management, organization, and drafting strategies that contribute to successful academic writing. Students will develop a writing plan they can apply any writing assignment.

September 12: Building an Effective Argument
In this workshop we will cover: How to Effectively develop and Argument, The Rhetorical Triangle, Rhetorical Situation

September 19: Graduate Writing Workshop
In this workshop, we will discuss characteristics of various graduate writing genres including seminar papers, theses, and manuscripts. Students will learn strategies for how to effectively compose these different texts.

September 26: Writing Workshop: Avoiding Plagiarism
In this workshop, we will discuss strategies for avoiding academic misconduct and plagiarism.

October 3: Building an Effective Argument
In this workshop we will cover: How to Effectively develop and Argument, The Rhetorical Triangle, Rhetorical Situation

October 10: Research Writing
In this workshop, we will cover: Organization of sources, Annotated bibliographies, Research methods

October 17: Writing Workshop: Avoiding Plagiarism
In this workshop, we will discuss strategies for avoiding academic misconduct and plagiarism.

October 24: Citation Styles
In this workshop, we will briefly discuss each of the main citation styles (MLA, APA, and Chicago)

October 31: Creating Effective Slide Decks
In this workshop, we will discuss how to effectively use PowerPoint, Prezi, and Canva to create effective and compelling presentations. Students will experiment with these different platforms during the workshop.

November 7: Writing Workshop: Avoiding Plagiarism
In this workshop, we will discuss strategies for avoiding academic misconduct and plagiarism.

November 14: Citation Styles
In this workshop, we will briefly discuss each of the main citation styles (MLA, APA, and Chicago)
