Study English at an American university.
Prepare for undergraduate, graduate, or career success on the beautiful campus of Jacksonville State University.
ELI On-Campus Intensive English Program
Come to the friendly campus of Jacksonville State University, where the teachers of the English Language Institute (ELI) will guide you through 154 hours of advanced English instruction to prepare you for the requirements of university and career. Scientific research shows that such intensive "immersion" is the best way to master a language (Tseng et al., 2021).
ELI's courses emphasize the ability to express yourself effectively, so you can be confident that you will have the real-world skills to succeed:
Listening, Speaking & Critical Thinking
Upgrade your verbal skills, especially your ability to communicate effectively at college and in the workplace.
Reading, Writing & Critical Thinking
Read, write, and research at a professional level. Think critically about what you are reading and writing, participate in discussions, and collaborate with other students on team projects.
Public Speaking & Presentation
Become more confident organizing presentations and speaking to a live audience.
Produce the sounds of professional English. We will work on your pronunciation, intonation ("melody"), stress patterns ("rhythm"), and other elements that fluent speakers use.
Every session will feature a mini-course that simulates an actual university course, such as American Cinema, Biology, or Website Design.
To practice the English that you're learning in the classroom, and to learn more about university and American culture, you will be matched with one or more JSU students with whom you will meet regularly under the guidance of an ELI teacher.
Note: If you're continuing to the JSU Undergraduate or Graduate program, your ELI Certificate of Successful Completion means that you won't need a TOEFL or IELTS score for admission. Just select "Conditional Admission" in your ELI application. If you are not continuing to JSU, you will still be in a good position to get the TOEFL/IELTS/etc. score that you need.
Each of the seven weeks provides 22 hours of in-person instruction, for a total of 154 hours (308 hours for two sessions):
Note: Courses may also be available individually. Request information below.
Improving your English takes time and effort, but it's more fun if you have interesting experiences to talk and write about. You can see for yourself at our Students' Stories page and at Facebook and Instagram!
On the JSU campus: We will explore the university's services and facilities, so you can learn how to use International Student Services, Tutoring and Academic Support, and the Health and Fitness Centers. We will also visit undergraduate classes to meet professors and students, and we will enjoy cultural, sports, and other university events every week.
Beyond the JSU campus: We will take trips to places like NASA's Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, the World of Coca-Cola and CNN in Atlanta, and the beautiful Mt. Cheaha State Park, Little River Canyon, and Cathedral Caverns.
You can learn more about living and studying at JSU from this FAQ.
