Dr. Emily Sims

Dr. Sims is the Secondary Education Department Head.

Dr. Sims obtained both her B.S. in Management and Psychology and M.S. in Secondary English Education degrees from JSU. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in Curriculum and Instruction- Secondary English Education.

In 2004, she achieved National Board Certification and has since been recertified. Dr. Sims has served on several committees for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) at the local, state, and national levels. Currently, she holds a valid Alabama Teacher Certification in English grades 7-12. Dr. Sims' research interests include using Web 2.0 technologies as tools to improve student learning, and developing instructional activities that embed and promote critical thinking opportunities for secondary students.

In addition to supervising Practicum II students, her primary teaching load encompasses undergraduate and graduate-level ELA methods, literacy, and inquiry courses. She has taught the following courses: ED 300; ESE 300; ESE 383; ESE 404; ESE 430; ESE 422/522; ESE 485/535, ESE/RDG 567; and ESE 572.  Dr. Sims advises students in ELA undergraduate and graduate programs as well as foreign language programs.
