Law school is an exciting prospect for any student. Students within the College of Arts and Humanities may find law school as the next step in their professional development. Many law school students have a strong foundation in writing and research. Both skills are developed within the College of Arts and Humanities in majors such as English and History.

A degree from the Department of Art and Design offers a comprehensive professional education in the study and practice of visual art and design. Employers are interested in creative solutions and innovative thinking, so art and design majors work in various fields. Many students seek employment opportunities in the fields of graphic design, web design, UI/UX, motion graphics, animation, illustration, art history, photography, museum curation, social media management, fashion design, marketing, interior design, and cinematography.
The Department of Art and Design provides opportunities for professional experiences through service learning in a few courses, internship credit via ART 481 Internship in Graphic Design and ART 486 Internship in Museum Work, and practical experience in ART 434 Graphic Design Workshop. Students majoring in theatre and film gain skills in the fields of production, performance, and film. Theatre students can explore opportunities in professional theatre by auditioning for roles with various performing arts companies. Film students can learn hands-on techniques and gain professional experience by spending time at studios during the summer months. Students usually need to travel to urban areas for these career opportunities, but some students find such work on the JSU campus through Longleaf Studios, JSU Athletics, or JSU Marketing Services. Such opportunities can be explored more in depth by meeting with your Career Development Coordinator.
The Department of Theatre and Film provides opportunities for professional development through main stage productions, department films, student films, and in partnerships with The Shakespeare Project and Longleaf Studios. Students working on a degree in English can develop careers in a variety of fields. Many graduates have gone on to pursue law degrees, work in education, and much more. Below, students will find links to websites that may be of interest. To prepare students for “real world” work, the English Department offers the following experiences:
EH 491 Internship and the English Department Internship Program- EH 490/590 Writing Center Practicum that provides hands-on experience tutoring writing
- EH 330 Writing for the Web that gives students the opportunity to write web content for JSU websites
- EH 482 Grantwriting that walks students through writing their first grants
- EH 355 Publishing Practicum that gives students hands-on experiences publishing a literary journal
- EH 435 Creative Collective, the English Department’s in-house “publishing company,” provides students with professional writing project-based learning for campus and community partners

Students pursuing a degree in Music at JSU usually have a concentration in music education. That major includes professional experience via a teaching internship (see the College of Education webpage). Other concentrations, General Music and Performance, provide professional experience as well through private studio teaching, music academies, and working with semi-professional choirs and/or instrumental ensembles. All music students gain professional experience through performances culminating in a Capstone performance such as the Junior or Senior Recital. The Department of Music encourages students to pursue additional internship and employment opportunities, and music alumni have successful careers in a variety of sectors, including the law, non-profit and government work, the music industry, and more.
