Who is my academic advisor?

When you log into your MyJSU, you will find your Advisor(s) listed under Student Records on your Student Information page.

If you have recently changed your major and have not been assigned a new advisor, please contact the department of your major.

**Students who want to change their major should contact the department of the new major to complete a Change of Major Form.

When should I meet with my advisor?

Students are assigned an advisor based on their major and classification.

First-time freshman students will meet their advisors at New Student Orientation.

First-time transfer students should contact the School’s Coordinator for Certification, Advising, and Academic Support for advisor information.

Students should contact their advisor well in advance of registration to schedule an appointment to discuss degree requirements and review the courses they have chosen for the next semester. Distance Education students who take classes 100% online should contact their advisor by email for advisement information. Advising procedures may vary slightly by department; therefore, students should check with their department for specific details. Students must meet with their advisor to review a proposed schedule for the upcoming semester and to be cleared for registration.

Students should also meet with their advisor during the semester if they have questions, wish to explore options, or need to discuss any difficulties.

Students with more than one major should be advised by an advisor in each major.

Registration

Prior to registration, course offerings are viewable through the interactive class schedule at http://www.jsu.edu/registrar/registration.html or through the Schedule Planner via your MyJSU account.

Before meeting with your advisor, you should do the following:
  • View Course Offerings for the upcoming semester
  • Review the checksheet for your major and update completed courses
  • Prepare a Trial Schedule Form listing the courses you wish to take determined by your remaining requirements, noting any prerequisites.
  • Bring your completed Trial Schedule Form to the meeting for approval. You may also print and bring your completed schedule page from your Schedule Planner cart for approval.

*Remember your student status is based on hours earned, which does not include courses in progress. See your online transcript to determine hours earned. Do not delay advisement.
