Dr. Rebecca Turner

turnerDr. Rebecca O. Turner has been employed at JSU since August 1981, initially as an instructor of social work. In 1988 she was named Social Work Program Director, then Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work in 1990. In June 1998, she was named Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, a position she held until January 2002 when she was appointed Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs by former President Dr. William A. Meehan. In 2010 her title changed to Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. She is the first woman Vice President at Jacksonville State University.

Dr. Turner holds three social work degrees: a baccalaureate degree from the University of Montevallo (1971) and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama (1976 and 1990). She has trained hundreds of baccalaureate social work program directors and conducted almost fifty accreditation site visits and trained hundreds of site visitors. Turner served as a research fellow for two years through the U.S. Children’s Bureau and has served on the quality assurance committee, reviewing and assessing child welfare practice for more than twelve years. She is a licensed certified social worker, licensed for private independent practice, in the state of Alabama.

In higher education circles she writes about leadership and is known for leading transformational change on the campus of JSU with a learning centered focus. She holds the rank of professor of social work at Jacksonville State University, chairs the University Executive Council, chairs the Deans Council, and serves on a number of university committees. In the community she serves on the board for the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Advocacy Center, chairs the Quality Assurance Committee for Calhoun County Department of Human Resources, and is a board member for the United Way of East Alabama.

A native of Calhoun County, Dr. Turner and her family reside in Jacksonville.
