Chemistry major:     

We offer a bachelor of science degree in chemistry that can lead you into many interesting fields.

Within the chemistry program, students have four options to choose from. Click on the link for each track for a complete list of course requirements.

  • If you are considering a career as a pharmacist, veterinarian, forensics, physician or dentist, then consider majoring in chemistry under the General Chemistry track.
  • We have three professional tracks. Chemistry would be for students intending to enter a graduate chemistry program or work in a career as a chemist.
  • Biochemistry is the chemistry of all living things. Plants, animals, single-celled organisms. They all use the same basic chemical compounds to live their lives.
  • If you are interested in solving environmental problems, water quality and air pollution, Environmental chemistry would be your choice.

Chemistry minor requirements:

A minor in Chemistry consists of a minimum of 24 hours of Chemistry courses, including CY 105, 106, 107, 108, 231, 232 and an additional 8 hours of 300-400 level chemistry electives.

JSU Faculty Scholarship in Chemistry:

This award shall be a one-time award for outstanding achievement in Chemistry at Jacksonville State University. For a student’s application to be considered, the student should:

  • Be a full-time student and chemistry major at Jacksonville State University
  • Possess an overall GPA of 3.0, with a 3.5 in Chemistry
  • Have achieved Junior or Senior status by the deadline
  • Have not received this award in a previous year

In addition to academic success, the student’s service to the Chemistry program at JSU and to the community will be considered. These accomplishments may include: performing directed research; presenting research at local, regional, and national meetings; giving presentations for local high-school student groups; and attending preview day to interface with potential chemistry majors.
