The JSU Water Quality Lab was founded in 1999 and is currently directed by Dr. Nixon Mwebi, Associate Professor of Chemistry.
Water is essential to life, much more than even food, it is therefore necessary that as contentious citizens, we keep the water environments around us safe and habitable for us and the ecological system for now and the future. The purpose and goal of the lab is to provide citizens and environmental groups in northeast Alabama with high quality water testing. We use EPA approved methods of sampling and analysis. We offer a number of courses where students can work and train in a lab, learning proper sampling methods and several analytical procedures. The Water Quality Laboratory involves working indoors and outdoors as samples are taken to be tested. The science faculty is involved in many on-going projects several of which equip students with the necessary skill to solve environmental problems. Our goal is to recruit and train many students/faculty/citizens/ environmental groups to become chemical monitors of streams and lakes in their respective counties and surrounding areas.
