Membership in the JSU
Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi
Eligibility: Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only. Eligibility for membership is determined in accordance with standards of academic achievement and character set by the National Board of Directors of Phi Kappa Phi (with limited freedom for interpretation and adjustment by the local chapters in certain matters). Based on these standards, the JSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi selects most of its members from the following groups: undergraduate students in their junior and senior years, graduate and professional students, members of the faculty and professional staff, and alumni. (Under special circumstances, some others might qualify for membership as well.) Complete details of all eligibility requirements can be found in Article II of the JSU Chapter Bylaws.
Benefits: Membership is a distinction indicating superior academic performance that is widely recognized both in academics and in the job market. It establishes an affiliation with Phi Kappa Phi members worldwide in all academic disciplines that can result in leadership and networking opportunities on the chapter, regional, and national levels. It confers to both students and faculty eligibility for competitive scholarships, fellowships, grants, and awards. Members receive a quarterly journal, Phi Kappa Phi Forum, as well as a newsletter that keeps them up to date with the society’s activities.
Dues: There is a one time initiation fee of about $50 for new members. This includes the first year’s dues for the national society and for the JSU chapter and a small contribution towards expenses for the initiation ceremony. To maintain active membership in the society, members remit annual dues to the national society (currently $25 per year) and the appropriate local chapter (currently $10 per year for the JSU chapter). Once initiated into the society, those who allow their memberships to lapse due to nonpayment of dues may reactivate their memberships at any time by simply resuming these payments.
