Examity

Examity is a new online remote proctoring service option. With Examity, a student takes an online exam at a specific time under the oversight of a remote proctor. The proctoring session is also recorded for review.

When to Use Examity

Online courses are often scrutinized in the area of academic honesty (cheating) even though little data exists to show cheating is more prevalent in an online course than a traditional course. Responses to these concerns have resulted in many systems to address the issue, such as proctoring, lock down browsers, and test security techniques.

Since proctoring requires additional demands on instructors and students, (technology, complexity, costs, etc.), it should be a careful consideration if proctoring is needed to achieve course assessment goals. Whether by using alternative and authentic forms of assessment or by more secure testing techniques, course design may help to avoid or minimize the need for proctoring.

In many cases, proctoring (and an online proctoring service like Examity) is an excellent choice. Examity is an online and live proctoring service best employed for high stakes assessments such as mid-terms and finals. Examity may also be great for final assessments for degree and program completion. Generally, Examity is used for proctoring students at a distance.

Syllabus and Course Information

It is very important to notify students as early and clearly as possible when a course requires Examity or other proctoring services. Be sure to include these requirements in the course syllabus and in prominent areas of Blackboard. Below are samples of syllabus instructions and other information to send students. Items to address in your syllabus and course information may include:

  • Costs and Fees (Determined by the level of proctoring you choose. See below for costs.)
  • Student Instructions
  • Technical Requirements (Note- Examity requires a high speed Internet connection. Students should be aware of this requirement.)
  • Consequences of a Flagged Proctoring Session

There are two essential decisions for your use of Examity which affect costs and instructions for students. While these details are handled when you set-up your Examity proctoring session (see below set-up information), you may wish to consider these issues now.

Decision 1- Level of Proctoring

The level of proctoring refers to the extent to which your test is proctored via video only, a live proctor, and the amount of review videos receive. For a description of these levels, see Levels of Proctoring.

Decision 2- Length of Exam and Cost

The costs below are for a 1-hour exam. An exam in excess of 1-hour incurs a charge for additional hours. Partial hours are not possible, therefore, a test over 1-hour by any amount will cost an additional $7. Schedule your test for the shortest amount possible in order to save costs for your students.

Hourly rates are based on the time allowed setting in your Blackboard test. Set your Bb test for the shortest amount of time necessary for reasonable completion of the exam.

Costs (1 hour test)

  • Level AA- Not available for JSU
  • Level LA= $9 (no extra hourly cost)
  • Level 1= $9 ($3 per extra hour)
  • Level 2= $12 ($7 per extra hour)
  • Level 3= $16 ($7 per extra hour)

Costs are based on Blackboard time-allowed setting for the test and not the length the student uses to complete the test.

Additional hours- $7 per each additional hour (billable by the hour only)

Example: A 2-hour Level 3 test costs the student $23.

Students may incur further costs related to late scheduling, cancellation of sessions, etc.

Additional Considerations

Examity will adhere to the parameters you set for your test. For example, if students are allowed to use a calculator during the test. Examity proctors will not flag this as a warning. When setting up your test with Examity, you enter any special rules for the test. You may wish to include these rules within your syllabus and other course information.

Setting up Examity Proctoring Sessions

After you have chosen your Examity Proctoring Level, create your test within Blackboard as usual. Once the test exists in Blackboard, you will use the Examity portal to set-up your test with Examity and choose your test rules.

Step 1- Choose Examity Proctoring Level and Test Length

Choose the level of proctoring needed. Be sure to do this early so you can notify students in the syllabus and course information. Choose the lowest level appropriate to your assessment. The level you choose affects the cost.

Note- costs are for a 1 hour test.

  • Level AA- Not available for JSU
  • Level LA= $9 (no extra hourly cost)
  • Level 1= $9 ($3 per extra hour)
  • Level 2= $12 ($7 per extra hour)
  • Level 3= $16 ($7 per extra hour)

Step 2- Create Test in Blackboard

Set test length to shortest time reasonably necessary to complete the test.

Step 3- Set-up Course for Use with Examity

  • Find Your Course ID which looks like "2016FAJSUASBY32700513530."
  • You can find your Course ID within a Blackboard shell at the top of the navigation menu:

Course ID

  • Contact Examity Account manager, Brooke Poulin, Account Manager, at 617-415-7214 or bpoulin@examity.com.  The Examity Account Manager will work with you to ensure your course is properly prepared. You will also receive direct training and tips on using Examity in your course.

Note- The Examity SSO link inside your Blackboard shell will not function until you have contacted Brooke for final set-up steps.

Step 4- Schedule Your Examity Session

Exam Set-up Instructions

Reviewing Examity Proctored Sessions

Return to the Examity portal to find and review any flagged events. An proctored session may be viewed after the audit period (usually within 48 hours after the student submits). It is up to the instructor to determine if a flagged event constitutes a breach of academic honesty and to assign any consequences.

What Will an Examity Session be Like?

Does your course require you to use Examity Online Proctoring for one or more exams?

Please take careful note of the information below to ensure you have a trouble-free and successful experience with using Examity and with your test. As with any new service or technology, the first few times you use them, special care is needed to set a basis for future use. Taking your time now to establish good practices for using Examity will help you with any course in the future.

While the technology may make Examity seem different (even uncomfortable), being proctored online with Examity is largely like any other face-face test you have taken. You will be taking a test with someone watching you and others to better ensure a fair assessment for everyone. However, you do have the convenience of taking the test at home and with more flexibility in scheduling a time best for you.

Still, new ways of doing things can be unsettling. The first time you take a test with Examity, you may be nervous or concerned. Work through these instructions and check your technology carefully for the best and most successful experience. After all, the idea is to do well on your test.

What will the Examity experience be like? Watch this video to learn more about your upcoming test(s).

Cost and Fees

The base cost of an Examity session depends upon two major aspects of your test: 1) Examity Level, and 2) Length of the test. Both of these aspects are chosen by your professor. Ask your professor for how these aspects affect your course and your costs.

Standard costs for first hour of proctoring:

  • Level AA- Not available for JSU
  • Level LA= $9 (no extra hourly cost)
  • Level 1= $9 ($3 per extra hour)
  • Level 2= $12 ($7 per extra hour)
  • Level 3= $16 ($7 per extra hour)

Fees:

Scheduling of a proctoring session within 24 hours prior to a test- $5

Cancellations or changes to a proctoring session within 24 hours of a test- $5

You will be charged for the length of the exam scheduled by your professor and not the length you took to complete the exam. For example, if your professor scheduled a 2 hour exam level 3 exam, but you finish in 1 hour, your charge will be $23.

You are not charged for the time it takes to authenticate your identity and connect to the proctor. The timing for the exam does not start until after authentication.

IMPORTANT- Fees:

Scheduling of a proctoring session within 24 hours prior to a test- $5

Cancellations or changes to a proctoring session within 24 hours of a test- $5

Students are responsible for all costs and fees associated with Examity proctoring.
