Welcome to Project Management! As a unit of the Office for Institutional Research and Assessment, we are here to support faculty and University personnel with effective and efficient project management for externally funded grants and contracts, in compliance with requirements established by Federal and State laws, customer rules and regulations, and University policies and procedures.
Why project management? According to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) 4th Edition, project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques for project activities to meet the project requirements. By applying these techniques, any project can be managed more effectively.
The project management discipline can be applied to pre-award, award, and post-award activities. The inclusion of a project manager position during the pre-award phase has many benefits. Some benefits include creation of timelines and establishing project objectives. Also, the project manager is familiar with the grant or contract and can easily start work upon award. During award, the project manager position will be responsible for project organization, task tracking, and reporting. The PM will create the project management plan, maintain the timeline, and identify tasks. Additionally, the PM will submit financial reports as required by the Statement of Work. The project manager can assist the budget manager with time sheets and extra compensations forms as well as other human resources forms.
The project manager will assist the principal investigator with post-award activities to include closing out the grant/contract and ensuring all contractual requirements have been met. The project manager will also ensure stakeholder and customer satisfaction.
