JSU Field School Ahead of Schedule

Reprinted here in its entirety.

Nearly one year ago to the day, work began on the Jacksonville State University Field School and Canyon Center near Fort Payne.

And according to Project Director Pete Conroy, the building is more than taking shape.

“We are pleasantly ahead of schedule,” Conroy said. “The process has been easier than expected due to a good contractor, architect and weather.”

In fact, Conroy said the field school will be completed in time to have some preliminary events there before the grand opening in February or early March. The JSU Board of Directors plans to have its regular meeting there Oct. 20 and the public is invited. The field school will also play host to a Forever Wild meeting in early December.

Conroy said the 23,000-square-foot facility is just about ready.

“We are more than 90 percent complete,” Conroy said. “Sidewalks, driveways and interior furniture are all we lack.”

The field school will feature reception areas, meeting rooms, a library, shop, auditorium, museum, outdoor amphitheatre, an extensive walking trail system and office space for the National Park Service.

While the primary purpose for the Canyon Center is education, it will also be available as a facility for meetings, conferences, concerts, lectures, weddings, social occasions and more.
