JSU To Focus on School Violence and Baby Boomers |

The Baccalaureate Social Work Program at Jacksonville State University
is celebrating Social Work Month by hosting their 19th Annual Social
Work Conference on March 10, 2000, on the 11th floor of the Houston Cole
Library. Registration begins at 8:00 AM and the conference concludes at
1:30 PM following the luncheon. This year's conference will feature a
program to deal with violence in the schools. Another main presentation
will focus on the aging of the baby boom generation and how these
demographic changes will impact social services and the other main
aspects of modern society. Dr. Mark Fagan of JSU will lecture on the aging baby boom demographic phenomenon. Dr. Glen Browder, Eminent Scholar at JSU and a former member of the United States House of Representatives, will provide a response to the issues raised by the aging of the population from a governmental perspective. Dr. Browder is a former Secretary of State for Alabama and a former member of the Alabama Legislature. Mr. William T. Stephens, Deputy Director, The Retirement Systems of Alabama, will discuss retirement issues and Alabama's state government perspective for dealing with the issues associated with an aging society. Mr. Stephens received his law degree from Harvard University and studied National Security Policy in the Graduate School of International Studies under Dr. Henry Kissenger. He has practiced law in New York City and served as attorney for the State Ethics Commission. He has worked in the Alabama Attorney General's office and served as the General Counsel for The Retirement Systems of Alabama from 1980 to 1998. Mr. Stephens served on special assignment to the Alabama Legislature as legal adviser for revising the state Constitution. He drafted a proposed new Constitution which was adopted by the State Legislature but the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that it could not be voted on by the people. Sheriff Larry Amerson of Calhoun County and Ms. Robin Mackey will present on the topic of violence in the schools. They will discuss their program which is entitled: LINC (Locate, Intervene, Network=Change). Dr. Maureen Newton of JSU will make a presentation called "People Living with HIV/Aids and other Life-Threatening Conditions." Ms. Dee Barclift of JSU will be presenting on the topic "Personal Safety for Social Workers." Dr. Rebecca O. Turner, Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at JSU, will be honored at lunch for her service to the BSW Program and Department of Sociology at JSU.
